At Fakuma, Leistritz will demonstrate how a new feed aid on a twin-screw extruder can increase throughput sixfold—from 40 to 240 kg/h—when processing polyolefin fluff with low bulk density.

For materials with low bulk density, the performance limit is often reached even before the actual extrusion process begins. Recycled films, foamed plastics, fibers, or powders can form bridges in the feed system or float on top of the screws. Although the extruder still has capacity to spare, not enough material enters the process.

The new Leistritz LEH feed aid feeds the material evenly from above onto both extruder screws and breaks up material bridges in the feed stream. The material is compacted only slightly during this process. This ensures that the material flow remains stable without placing additional lateral pressure on the extruder screws. This eliminates the need for separate pre-compaction.

Sixfold increase in throughput in the experiment

In a test run on a ZSE 50 Maxx, Leistritz processed polyolefin fluff with a bulk density of 25 g/l and particle sizes ranging from 1 to 5 cm. Without LEH, the system achieved a throughput of 40 kg/h; with LEH, it reached 240 kg/h. In further trials, materials with bulk densities of 40 and 75 g/l were processed. For the material with a bulk density of 75 g/l, it was no longer the feed rate that limited performance, but rather the machine’s available torque.

“With many lightweight materials, the problem isn’t the extruder’s performance, but rather the feed into the extruder,” says Daniel Nagl, managing director of Leistritz Extrusion Technology. “With the LEH, we prevent the feed from slowing down the system. This allows for better utilization of the machine’s existing capacity.”

The Leistritz feed aid is designed for materials with bulk densities below 100 g/l. It can also be used to precisely feed even lightweight particles whose dimensions exceed the pitch of the extruder screws. Without assisted feeding, such particles may float on top of the screws.

Leistritz will demonstrate the new feed aid live at Fakuma 2026 in Friedrichshafen using the ZSE 50 Maxx twin-screw extruder.
