The materials specialist Techno-Compound is expanding its production capacity for long-glass-fiber-reinforced thermoplastics (LGF) at its Bad Sobernheim site by 4,800 metric tons per year. The new facility is scheduled to begin operations no later than the second quarter of 2027. The additional line will be integrated directly into the existing production concept. No process changes to the current overall workflow are required for the capacity expansion. This ensures that the company can maintain uninterrupted supply to the market during the installation phase.

The primary customers for LGF thermoplastics are automotive manufacturers and their suppliers. Techno-Compound also uses these specialty compounds for technical applications in the logistics, packaging, and construction sectors. Long glass fibers give components high mechanical strength combined with low weight. This makes the materials particularly attractive for structural components in automotive manufacturing.

Focus on Recycled Content Rates in Automotive Manufacturing

A key driver of this expansion is the portfolio of sustainable material options. The supplier’s LGF compounds use post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials in proportions ranging from 25% to 60%. With these recycled content levels, the material meets or exceeds the upcoming requirements of the EU End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation (ELV-R). These grades are primarily used in high-stress structural components in the vehicle interior.

“By expanding our capacity in the LGF sector, we are making targeted investments in the development of our facility,” explains Rifat Erden, Head of Sales and Marketing at Techno-Compound. Market demand for compounds that are both mechanically robust and sustainable has been rising steadily for years. “The expansion to an additional 4,800 metric tons per year is our direct response to this demand,” adds Erden.

Energy-Optimized Plant Operation

In addition to simply increasing production volume, the focus is on the operational efficiency of the new plant. The compounder has designed the machine to ensure energy-optimized operation. “With this investment, we are underscoring our commitment to providing material solutions for demanding applications,” emphasizes Dirk Breitbach, managing director of Techno-Compound. The company is thereby aiming for long-term growth in its core markets. (mg)
