The PPWR aims to drastically reduce packaging waste and establish a functioning circular economy. André Koring of the VDMA does not believe it will be as easy as Brussels would like. The mechanical engineering sector, in particular, needs clear, reliable, and technology-neutral framework conditions.

Effective August 12, 2026, the new EU Packaging Regulation will apply directly in all countries of the European Union. Its primary goal is to reduce packaging waste. Starting in 2030, all packaging must be designed to minimize its weight and volume while maintaining its functionality. Plastic packaging must be recyclable and contain a specified minimum percentage of recycled material derived from post-consumer waste.
