Borouge is making recycling a strategic component of its European polyolefin business. In doing so, the company is responding to the PPWR, rising demand for recycled materials, and the need for European sources of raw materials.

Borouge International is investing in the expansion of its mechanical recycling capacity in Europe at its sites in Niedergebra (Germany) and Wildon (Austria). According to the company, these investments will strengthen its ability to meet growing customer demand in Europe for mechanically recycled polyolefins. At the same time, customers are expected to benefit from a reliable supply of recycled materials, driven by rising market demands, regulatory developments such as the PPWR, and the need for reliable supply chains.

Borouge International was formed in 2026 through the merger of the petrochemical companies Borealis, Borouge Plc, and Nova Chemicals. Behind the group—headquartered in Vienna—stands the United Arab Emirates’ state-owned oil company, Adnoc, and the Austrian company OMV.

14,000 metric tons of additional recycling capacity

At the Borouge International Niedergebra site (formerly mtm plastics), the annual production capacity for recycled mixed polyolefins (rPO) will be increased by just under 9 metric metric tons. The facility processes mixed post-consumer polyolefin waste into high-quality recycled materials for a wide range of rigid applications. The additional capacity is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2027.

At the Borouge International Wildon (formerly Ecoplast) site, the annual production capacity for recycled polyethylene (rPE) will be expanded by up to 5 metric tons. The additional capacity is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2027 and will meet the growing demand for recycled materials, particularly for flexible packaging applications.

Borouge International's European recycling portfolio is complemented by its Elin Pelin facility in Bulgaria, where more than 20 metric tons of high-quality recycled resin grades are produced annually from post-consumer polypropylene (rPP) are produced annually. Together, the European sites cover the areas of flexible PE applications, rigid PP applications, and mixed polyolefin streams, offering customers a comprehensive product portfolio of circular economy solutions.

Recycled materials are becoming a strategic raw material

“Recycled materials are a strategic resource in Europe and around the world. They not only help meet sustainability and regulatory requirements. They also strengthen industrial competitiveness, brand differentiation, and supply chain resilience,” says Dirk Langhammer, Senior Vice President of Circular Solutions at Borouge International.

The investments in the European recycling facilities will provide an even broader customer base with reliable access to circular polyolefin solutions for a wide range of applications. Langhammer did not comment on the amount of the investment.
