Mocom at Fakuma 2026 Performance Meets Sustainability

From Melanie Ehrhardt (in charge) | Translated by AI 3 min Reading Time

How can high technical requirements be combined with a smaller material footprint? At Fakuma 2026, Mocom showcased new compounds that address precisely this challenge.

At Fakuma 2026, Mocom presented new material solutions for demanding applications. The new developments address a variety of technical requirements—ranging from robust lightweight construction applications to use at low temperatures and structural components.

These included, among other things, the new Wic compounds based on recycled carbon fibers. According to the manufacturer, they are characterized by excellent mechanical properties combined with low density and thus low weight. During the trade show “Speed Date” with Dirk Raudies (box), the discussion also touched on the question: What must a compound deliver today to ensure that it is not only technically impressive but also sustainable?

What development or new product should visitors definitely not miss at your booth, and what specific problem does it solve?

This year, we’re focusing on lightweight construction. We’ve expanded our product portfolio with new developments. Unfortunately, there aren’t any applications for them yet, but we already have the products. We’ve also expanded the Wic portfolio with new developments—one based on polyamide 12 and one based on para. These are primarily driven by mechanical requirements that customers bring to us.

Both high technical requirements and sustainability play a role in your new materials. How do you manage to combine these two requirements in a single compound—without compromising on performance?

It is very important that we pay close attention to the requirements profile we receive from our customers. What do we really need to achieve in order to meet the requirements that also exist within the industries? This is where it’s important to make selections: Which raw materials do we use? How do the raw materials interact with one another? And what level of quality can we achieve when incorporating them into the application? This combination then makes it possible to offer customer-specific or even application-specific solutions.

Looking ahead to the next few years: Which requirements from sectors such as electric mobility, electronics, or regulation will have a particularly significant impact on the development of compounds—and how is Mocom preparing for this?

We see that requirements are constantly changing. There are new regulations and legal requirements that we must comply with. We are therefore continuously expanding our product portfolio with an eye toward what our products will need to deliver in the future. One example of this is our flame-retardant grades, where we now also use polypropylene with flame retardancy.

Reinforced with recycled carbon fibers

Wic PA 12 30 was specifically developed for rugged lightweight construction applications. In addition to its low weight, the product offers high impact strength even at low temperatures. Furthermore, the compound, which is based on polyamide 12 (PA12), is characterized by very low moisture absorption. As a result, its mechanical properties and dimensions remain stable even under varying climatic conditions.

The use of recycled carbon fiber also results in a GWP that is up to 65% lower compared to virgin carbon fiber. Typical applications include products in the sports and leisure sectors, such as ski bindings, battery housings for e-bikes, saddle shells, and clipless pedals.

Mechanics Meets Design

Wic Para 30 is based on a partially aromatic polyamide designed for high stiffness and strength, as well as excellent surface quality. The compound’s low water absorption ensures that its mechanical properties are retained almost entirely even after conditioning. This makes Wic PARA 30 particularly suitable for load-bearing components that are also visible, where high mechanical requirements must be combined with an attractive surface finish—for example, display mounts.

With Wic Para, Mocom is expanding its existing product line to include electrically conductive grades. In addition, Altech Para GF continues to offer glass-fiber-reinforced Para compounds for applications that require the highest mechanical performance without electrical conductivity, as well as custom coloring.

2K application without additional bonding agents

Under the Alfater XL brand, Mocom also presented a new development in the field of PA-adhesive solutions for technical two-component applications. The new thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) was specifically developed for use with polyamide 12; it can be processed directly on the thermoplastic and enables direct two-component processing without additional bonding agents. This opens up additional possibilities for hard-soft bonds and is suitable, among other things, for demanding applications in the automotive, electrical and electronics, and sports and leisure sectors.
